in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Christmas in China<\/p>\n<p>There seemed to be more Christmas trees and Santa faces around than the previous year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/reflections-109.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1439\" title=\"reflections 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My pineapple top \u00a0&#8220;Christmas tree&#8221; with the snowman tree ornament from Christmas lunch.\u00a0 I brought the cross stitched \u00a0koala in a stocking from Australia.\u00a0 It now has a new home in the Philippines.\u00a0 The small red pot previously \u00a0had cacti in it\u00a0and was a gift from a student last Christmas.\u00a0 Obviously it didn&#8217;t\u00a0survive the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Xingtai-Xamas-Party-English-Dept-concert-048.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" entertainers at the city&#8217;s Christmas dinner for foreign teachers.\u00a0 A number of the Chinese teacher entertainers\u00a0had dressed in Christmas colours.<\/p>\n<p><a party.\u00a0 This time it was the English Department at the college which put on a Christmas concert.\u00a0 Two students dressed as Santas and doing \u00a0an item.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1443\" title=\"019\" 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the many apples I received from students as Christmas gifts.\u00a0 From what I can understand apple in pinyin has the same meaning as <em>\u00a0safety<\/em> and therefore is considered an appropriate Christmas gift.\u00a0 The usual method of presentation is to \u00a0wrap the apple\u00a0or sometimes oranges, in several layers of paper and cellophane.\u00a0 Special boxes are also made for the occasion.\u00a0 One student made a box to size, covered it in attractive paper and decorated it with ribbon folded\u00a0to special designs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/presents-021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1444\" title=\"presents 021\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/presents-021-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" ribbons into similar and other designs to stick on their walls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/presents-039.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More gifts.\u00a0 The student who knitted the red scarf asked me about my favourite colours and 4 or 5 mornings later was on my doorstep with the scarf!\u00a0 The student who\u00a0gave me\u00a0the black scarf didn&#8217;t want me to have it, but rather something warmer, more colourful and larger, but she insisted on me shopping for it with her.\u00a0 I was more concerned about luggage weight and future use so I chose one lighter and more versatile.\u00a0 The purple one was also knitted by a student and came completely out of the blue.\u00a0 Students didn&#8217;t want my head to be cold either so I gathered a couple of hats too!\u00a0 No wonder I had to ditch clothes and things in China and still had to pay an excess luggage charge in Hong Kong!<\/p>\n<p>My contract provided for a day off for Christmas, but as Christmas Day was a Saturday it was irrelevant.\u00a0 I cancelled scheduled English classes the previous year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Christmas-2010-011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1446\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the plum pudding which was cooked by one of the foreign teachers and which we ate on Christmas night.\u00a0 It tasted pretty
