{"id":436,"date":"2010-07-16T22:48:43","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T14:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/?p=436"},"modified":"2010-07-16T23:06:43","modified_gmt":"2010-07-16T15:06:43","slug":"lugu-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/?p=436","title":{"rendered":"Lugu Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-361.jpg\"><\/a>Lugu Lake<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/yunnan-300dpi13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-437\" title=\"yunnan-300dpi[1]\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/yunnan-300dpi13-284x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/yunnan-300dpi13-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/yunnan-300dpi13.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I spent 3 days at Lugu Lake which is a couple of hundred kilometres north of Lijiang.\u00a0 Look for the purple lines north of Lijiang, in the north.\u00a0 The green line from Lijiang shows my current position, Dali.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 When we reached Lake Lugu from Lijiang the minibus driver stopped at the lakeside for us to have a boat ride to a nearby island.\u00a0 I\u2019d read of the scam on the internet the previous night and after more than 7 hours of travel was not interested.\u00a0 Fortunately it was raining so none of the others was interested either although it took some time for the driver to give in and start driving again.\u00a0 Apparently he tried to have them agree to an expensive dinner and dance performance too, but none took up the offer.\u00a0 (I was the only foreigner &amp; non Chinese speaker there.) Some of us went under our own steam on another night for a much cheaper experience.<\/p>\n<p>The entrance fee to the area was pretty steep, like its mountains.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have minded if they had put some of it towards clearing the roads. The rock the mountain is composed of is crumbly and there were numerous piles of dirt, rocks or boulders strewn around blocking or impeding traffic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/to-Liger-086.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-438\" title=\"to Liger 086\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/to-Liger-086-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/to-Liger-086-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/to-Liger-086.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The road from Lijiang to and through the area is only two lanes wide. Workers continued to make concrete strips on either side of the tar and that seemed to be the priority rather than landslides.\u00a0 New road works were under way on another part of the main road. When I left Lugu Lake \u00a0part of the road had either been damaged by nature or blocked due to road work.\u00a0 I never did work it out I was too concerned about staying upright while putting one foot in front of the other while walking up a very broken, very muddy, very steep road for what seemed like about 2 miles while carrying far too much luggage.\u00a0 The bus dropped us and we had to walk through the muck and along the steep road till we reached the area where the next bus would collect us.\u00a0 About half way through one of the people I\u2019d been hanging out with offered to carry my suitcase.\u00a0 The next bus could have driven down a lot further than it did but none of them did for some reason.\u00a0 We only had to wait about an hour, an hour too long, but when we reached the pickup point I saw one of the hostellers who had left 3 hours before.\u00a0 Fortunately his bus soon appeared. \u00a0If I\u2019d had any breath or known that my bus wouldn\u2019t arrived for an hour I would have taken some photos once I left the mud.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/leaving-Lugu-Lake-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-439\" title=\"leaving Lugu Lake 003\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/leaving-Lugu-Lake-003-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/leaving-Lugu-Lake-003-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/leaving-Lugu-Lake-003.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Here is one of us waiting.\u00a0 It started to rain lightly soon after we arrived at the collection point.<\/p>\n<p>Lugu Lake is an area famous for its matriarchal society and beautiful scenery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-440\" title=\"Lugu Lake 013\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-013-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-013-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-013.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>That&#8217;s the\u00a0village I stayed in, Lige.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The Mosuo women make the decisions.\u00a0 The grandmother is the boss.\u00a0 The custom is for women not to marry but to take a lover.\u00a0 Adult sons live with their mothers and do their bidding. If they have children they are required to support them, while the relationship lasts, but not live with them.\u00a0 Inheritance is through the woman.\u00a0 That is the custom. I\u2019m not sure to what extent it is still followed as I saw and heard a few things which indicate that it is not that straightforward.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-035.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-443\" title=\"Lugu Lake 035\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-035-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-035-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-035.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The other photos are of parts of Lugu Lake.\u00a0 There are many little settlements scattered around the lake which is mainly in the province of Yunnan and partly in Sichuan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-071.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-441\" title=\"Lugu Lake 071\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-071-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-071-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-071.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The major crop is potatoes.\u00a0 There are potatoes everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0 The other main crop is corn which is\u00a0grown \u00a0everywhere I&#8217;ver ever been in China. Every afternoon several small piglets were sacrificed for BBQed pig which was cooked in the streets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/performance-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-452\" title=\"performance 007\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/performance-007-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/performance-007-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/performance-007.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0I don&#8217;t see how the supply could cope with the usage I observed.\u00a0 There must be lots of pig breeding occuring which I didn&#8217;t see.<\/p>\n<p>I went on a couple of boat rides, including one very early in the morning, a 6 hour minibus tour around part of the lake, a performance by the Mosuo people and a few short walks in the vicinity of the hostel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-269.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-442\" title=\"Lugu Lake 269\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-269-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-269-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kerry.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Lugu-Lake-269.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0There is a considerable amount of construction work occurring all over the area to bring in more tourists.\u00a0 Internet access, while not good was better than I had previously experienced in Yunnan.\u00a0 We had a few blackouts including one lasting for hours on the morning of my departure.
